Cerrillos Road Construction Winding Down
Final Work on Siler Road Friday Morning
Santa Fe, NM – December 29, 2011 – Since April, the stretch of Cerrillos Road between Cielo Court to Camino Carlos Rey east of the car dealership has been dug up; a five-foot six-inch storm drain was installed along with other utilities, backfilled and Cerrillos Road was widened to include three driving lanes, a 5’ bike lane and an auxiliary lane in each direction; medians have been replaced and landscaping added; turn bays have been built; buses have new shelters and pedestrians have a safer and ADA-compliant sidewalk; and street lighting and signals were replaced. Weather permitting, the bulk of that work is ending on Saturday, January 7, according to the contractor, AUI, Inc.
There are still odds and ends for the contractor to complete, but the project will be substantially complete when they shut down for the winter. The contractor will be back in the spring to completely finish the project, since some of the finishing items are temperature sensitive.
Beginning Friday morning, weather permitting, at 6:00 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. Siler Road traffic signal will be turned to flashing red lights. Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes or expect delays.
When Weather Stalls Construction
August 26, 2011 - Up until last week the summer monsoons haven’t been a threat to the Cerrillos Road construction and drainage project. The recent heavy rains left huge puddles that had to be pumped out in order to complete paving of the eastbound lanes. The ground must be dry so when 300-degree asphalt is placed and compacted, there isn’t chance for cracks or potholes. Paving continues and is expected to be complete before the busy Labor Day weekend, at which time traffic is scheduled to be switched to the other side of the street.
For businesses affected by this construction, there is help. Call Val Alonzo at 428-1803. For questions about the project contact Desirae Lujan, 955-6654.

City Sign Enforcement Lightened for Businesses within Construction Zones
Santa Fe, NM – August 2, 2011 – In an effort to help businesses that are affected by roadway construction, only businesses located in construction zones will be allowed temporary banner advertising during the construction period. Currently, the construction zones are on Cerrillos Road from Calle del Cielo east past Camino Carlos Rey to Lujan; water line installation at South Meadows from Agua Fria to Jaguar and ending at Cerrillos Road; and pedestrian safety and median improvement along Airport Road from San Felipe/Country Club Drive to Lopez Lane.
Normal sign enforcement will continue for all businesses located outside construction areas. To review the signage ordinance, go to www.santafenm.gov/city code/Chapter XIV. For more information contact Georgia Urioste, Zoning Inspection Supervisor, 955-6980.
City Staff, Media and Chamber Join Efforts for Locals and Visitors to "Shop Cerrillos Road!"
Santa Fe, NM – August 1, 2011 – In an effort to assist local businesses affected by the storm-drain installation and road construction on a stretch of Cerrillos Road from Calle del Cielo east to Lujan Street, city staff is working with advertising reps from the New Mexican, Hutton Broadcasting, and the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce to entice locals and visitors to “Shop Cerrillos Road!”
Santa Fe Mayor David Coss said of the businesses, “Cerrillos Road is one of the busiest shopping, dining and lodging corridors in Northern New Mexico. All businesses are open and accessible—it takes just a few extra minutes to get to your destination, and I urge all locals and visitors alike to stay in the hotels; shop the many fine stores; and eat at the great restaurants.”
Cerrillos Road businesses are offered free assistance from the Economic Development Division’s Villa Rael Program villareal@santafebiz.org or call Val Alonzo at 438-1803. The Santa Fe Convention and Visitors Bureau’s web site, www.santafe.org has a piece entitled “Save on Cerrillos Road” that details the value one gets for the dollar by patronizing the shops, motels and restaurants. Hutton Broadcasting’s www.santafe.com welcomes bloggers who braved the orange barrels and “Shopped Cerrillos Road!” or business owners who want to tout their establishments.
Construction was delayed a while when a gas line was found beneath the surface that had to be lowered. That work is complete, and the storm-drain work has continued. AUI, Inc. contractors and city staff are working on a new schedule.

Cerrillos Road, Santa Fe's Choice for Value Lodging, Shopping, and Dining
Coming into Santa Fe from the south along the picturesque Turquoise Trail or off of I-25 leads travelers onto Cerrillos Road, one of the city's most commercially active streets. It's also the place to find economical lodging in town, some of the city's best ethnic restaurants, and a whole world of shopping.
The closer accommodations are to downtown Santa Fe, typically–not always–the more expensive they are. Along Cerrillos Road however there are more than 20 moderately priced hotels and motels, from modern, national chains, to independently owned properties that are true icons of the days when Route 66 passed through. Most of this lodging is within four miles or less of Santa Fe's historic downtown and the city's renowned attractions.
Cerrillos is home to some of Santa Fe's best restaurants as well, with ethnic choices that include Indian, true Mexican, Thai, Asian fusion, Mexican seafood, Zacatecas, African fusion, and of course, Northern New Mexico's own savory regional cuisine. In addition, well known national restaurants can be found along Cerrillos and on its side streets.
There may be more shopping per mile on Cerrillos than any other street in Santa Fe, save gallery-rich Canyon Road. Besides bordering the city's largest mall, Santa Fe's only discount mall, and three major shopping plazas, Cerrillos is filled with a variety of small shops and businesses catering to locals and visitors alike.
A commercial corridor that holds some of Santa Fe's best deals year 'round, Cerrillos Road will reward those who explore its length with great food, bountiful shopping, and the most reasonably priced lodging in the city.
From Simon Brackley, Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce—988-3279
Simon will be writing an article for the Chamber’s double page insert in next week’s New Mexican on appealing to locals to keep supporting Cerrillos Road businesses.
The advertising reps from the New Mexican, Tamara Hand or Gary Brouse, and Hutton Broadcasting, Vera Hayduk, may be contacting you for discounts or “advertorials” that your business could provide them some information. While the city cannot expend any funds to help advertise, we will do all that we can to bring back customers during the “Orange Barrel Blues.”
Also, we are working with the various departments to waive banner and sign regulations for businesses along construction zones. More information on that will be coming.
Cerrillos Road Phase IIB Reconstruction Project Q&A
Q. In a July 26 story, Tom Sharpe quoted you saying that the city had asked AUI for an updated construction schedule? Did you receive that? Can you share it?
What is the prospective time when Cerrillos Road construction will no longer obstruct businesses there? When will work switch from the east side to the west side?
Thanks
Julie Ann Grimm, reporter
The Santa Fe New Mexican
A. As a result of unexpected delays for gas line relocation work, the City asked AUI to submit a revised schedule to get the project back on or near the originally scheduled completion dates. On Friday, July 29th, the City received a draft working schedule and associated costs from the contractor to accelerate construction which is currently under review by city staff. This proposal includes provisions for supplying additional work crews with extended work hours six days a week. City staff plans to forward this proposal for council consideration and approval on August 10th. The schedule will be released when finalized.
Based on the current schedule, the eastbound lanes currently under construction are scheduled for completion by mid-August, enabling traffic to be switched to this newly constructed southern portion of Cerrillos Road. Paving equipment arrived on site yesterday afternoon, signaling that paving may begin as early as this week.
